History
Aquia Landing Park is a historical site and popular public beach located in Stafford County, Virginia. Located seven miles east of Stafford Courthouse, the park is a great spot for picnicking, fishing and hiking.
Aquia Landing was a vital transportation hub and shipping port for Union supplies during the Civil War. It was the terminus of the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad. Steamboats operated from the port until 1877.
In addition to its historical significance, Aquia Landing was a stop on the Underground Railroad to Freedom. In the early 19th century, ten thousand enslaved people escaped freedom through the river.
In 1862, the Union army built new wharves and storage buildings for their supplies. The railroad was extended across Aquia Creek in 1872.
When the Confederate army occupied Stafford County in 1861-1865, the Potomac River became the main point of communication between Richmond, VA and Washington, DC.
