Power Washing Your Concrete Patio

Best Power Washing Patio Pavers

If you’re facing stubborn stains that regular cleaning isn’t removing, it may be time to turn to power washing patio pavers. This is an effective method for cleaning pavers, but you need to follow certain guidelines. Start by sweeping the patio pavers, then rinse them off with your hose at the highest jet setting. Next, apply a cleaner and scrub the surface.

Clean the Surface

If you clean your patio pavers regularly, they’ll last longer and look better. A broom and blower can remove light debris, while a power washer will blast away dirt and grime to make your patio shine.

If regular cleaning methods aren’t enough to get your pavers clean, try a bleach solution. A ratio of 1 cup of bleach per gallon of water should be sufficient to break down stubborn stains, including mold and algae. Be sure to test a small area first, as high concentrations of bleach can damage the surface.

Another option is to mix equal parts of baking soda and water to make a paste. This natural, mild abrasive will remove stubborn stains and leave your patio pavers looking brand-new. Just be sure to rinse thoroughly with water and direct the runoff toward a drain as you work. This will help prevent the formation of weeds between seams that can weaken the integrity of your patio.

Remove Debris

Over time, dirt and grime build up on your patio pavers. Depending on the level of contamination, you may need more than just a broom and garden hose to get your patio looking like new again.

Mix and apply the solution per the package instructions, then scrub the affected areas with a brush. Rinse thoroughly. White vinegar can also be a great cleaner for some types of stains. Just remember to dilute it, as dark vinegar can stain pavers. A water and soap solution is an excellent choice for general cleaning, but avoid bleach, which has been linked to cancer, and abrasive scrub brushes that can scratch the surface of the paving stones.

Apply a Sealer

If you don’t have the time or desire to strip your pavers, consider sealing them. This will keep them looking great, slow down future staining and make it much easier to clean in the future. Most landscape contractors will seal pavers when they are installed, but you can also do this yourself.

First, hose down the surface of your pavers. This will remove any lingering debris and cleaning solution residue. Once the area is dry, you can start preparing your cleaning solution. You can purchase a concrete cleaner from a home improvement store, or you can DIY your own gentle, non-acidic cleaning solution with some common household products.

Follow the directions on the cleaning product you choose to apply a thick coat of sealer to your pavers. Use a low-pressure sprayer to saturate the surface and any crevices, then use a roller to soak up any excess for even coverage.

Reapply the Sealer

After the pavers are thoroughly cleaned, apply a cleaner that’s designed to protect them from dirt and grime. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for application. Before using the cleaner, sweep the pavers again and remove debris from between the joints. Also brush away any moss or mildew that’s growing on or between the pavers, and pull any weeds that have grown there.

Rinse off the pavers once the cleaner is applied. A hose with a high-pressure setting is ideal, but it’s possible to damage the paving stones with too much force. Scrub the stains with a stiff brush and rinse thoroughly. A natural, eco-friendly option that can be used on a variety of surfaces is white vinegar. Apply the diluted solution to the pavers and scrub thoroughly. This will also help to shift rust and salt marks that accumulate on paved surfaces.
